PAWS Rehabilitation and Feeding Program

3 kilos of rice and 15 kilos of ground meat boiling away in pots being stirred furiously by arms of 4 almost impatient close to the brink frantic friends. It was as if the action would hasten the cooking process. Lid on and off, on and off again, repeat that again with eyes peeping at the consistency of the bubbling stew- it was dinner for the furry four pawed lovables waiting for us at the Philippine Animal Welfare Society.

By the time we smelled like longganisas we knew their dinner was cooked and with 15 minutes left on the clock a call for a taxi to head off to Loyola Heights in Katipunan Valley was made.

The story of how the taxi driver complained and made irritable voice ticks of annoyance "hindi naman UP yan eh" - I'll skip. Boo!

Art, Mike, Patty, and I with tired and tolerating sarcastic smiles on our faces arrived late at the shelter, yet excited to visit the dogs and cats, and to assist in serving their dinner. The dogs were barking with wonder and probably woofing to each other - "who are our visitors, who are our visitors? Are they gonna feed us, pet us, call our names in high pitched tones? Hug us to death?" (they were going to get it alright, I tried to persuade Mike to take home a cat and I am going to keep on trying) Their barks for attention is not something that you or I would be able to ignore, with puppy dog eyes that look back at you - how can you?

There are around 275 cats and 70 to 80 (or less) dogs at the shelter being cared for by volunteers and are patiently waiting to be found by loving two legged friends or masters.

  • To volunteer at the shelter you can visit the location or visit their website - volunteering activities range from: rehabilitation and feeding programs for dogs, touring visitors, cleaning around the site, etc. (Bring lots of newspaper with you, they need all that they can get)
  • To adopt a dog - ocular visits and two interviews with PAWS will be done, while visits to the dog will have to be made.
  • To adopt a cat - it is easier. An interview and an ocular visit by PAWS will be done, but if I remember correctly you can take home your cat even after the interview.
I brought together friends who I knew would easily say yes to spending a few hours at the market to purchase food and cooking tools, and who also wouldn't mind doing heavy duty cooking for a good cause. I heart you guys!

I fell in love with the dogs in the quarantined area, these guys are a bit sensitive and are either afraid of humans or aggressive towards humans and it is due to neglect, abuse, and abandonment, but they are getting better through the help of friendly volunteers and their visitors. *hee* Check out the little short dude - we had a connection! The caretaker said the little dog is supposedly not friendly, but he came over to sniff the longganisa smelly me! (it was probably the sausagey smell, eh?)
